About "European boycott" of Israeli academics

We wish to express our great concern at the biased and completely inappropriate sacking by a British Professor of two colleagues purely because they are Israeli. The attitude expressed by Prof. Baker smacks of nothing seen in Europe since the infamous anti-Jewish laws promulgated by the Nazis at Nuremberg that fired all academics who were Jewish.

In fact, this sacking has nothing to do with a "European boycott" of Israeli academics, but is actually an "Egyptian boycott" since Prof. Baker is originally Egyptian (according to press reports). Therefore, we urge all European academics not to allow themselves to be dragged into this kind of nationalist perversion of science.

Partly because of the current and completely unjustified so-called boycott of Israeli academics, we are in the process of organizing the World Congress of Jewish Scientists (WCJS), so far supported by hundreds of scientists worldwide. This organization will work on behalf of full academic freedom for scientists of all races, nationalities and persuasions. We urge those who support our positions (see www.wcjs.org) to join us in this endeavor.

There should be no boycotts of any group of scientists except in the most extreme circumstances. Only clear proof of the personal involvement of an individual scientist in inhumane activities would be justification for such an action!
