The Scientific Conference commemorating the 90th birthday and 70 years of Scientific and Public Activity of Professor Alexander Lerner – eminent scientist and world-known public figure – was held on October 28, 2003, in The Weizman Institute of Science, Israel. Prof. Lerner is famous as one of the creators of the theory of optimal control. There were more then 30 participants in this conference from different universities and scientific centers in Israel and other countries (see «the list of participants”).
To start the conference, Prof. S. Yakovenko (WIS) briefly described the scientific and public activity of Prof. A. Lerner. Then greetings to Prof. Lerner were delivered by Prof. M. Sela (WIS), Prof. E. Altshuler (WCJS), Prof. V. Brailovsky (Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs) as well as by Dr. Yu. Stern (Knesset Member). Several letters of greeting were read from Israel (Prof. Y. Neiman – ex-Minister of Min. of Science, Art and Culture) and from abroad (USA, Russia). Mr. V. Knijnik (General Director of WCJS) gave a Greeting address to Prof. Lerner and presented a Memorial Gift from WCJS.
The scientific program of the Conference included lectures by Prof. R. Rubinshtein (Technion): "On A. Lerner's works on optimal control", Prof. E. Trifonov (WIS): "Refusenik seminars", Prof. I. Kochubievskii (WCJS): "Contribution of A. Lerner to the theory of automatic control" and Prof. J. Cohen (WCJS): "The Jewish culture of scientific leadership."
In conclusion, Prof. A. Lerner delivered his lecture on: "My recent works in biomedical engineering" and expressed his gratitude to all participants for their cordial words.
